Each novel time travels between eighteenth century France and modern-day Manhattan and chronicles the continuing plight of the solitary, wounded soul, Christian Du Mauré, born and made vampire in eighteenth century France, who now resides in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, surrounded by books and priceless art and antiques. He shares this world with his confidant and childhood friend, vampire Michel Baptiste, who runs a Gothic vampire bar in the East Village.
Christian lives a life of solitude, watching over a young mortal woman with whom he shares a history full of loss, regret, betrayal, and love. When her brother is murdered in Central Park she is thrust into a world she never knew existed, setting in motion a series of events over which she has no control, and so, the story begins for two vampires and one mortal woman.
